The ultimate packing list for your Safari!
Packing for a safari is way much different from any other common tour or holidays at the beach. In a few days an exciting safari experience awaits you for the first time. At this moment you might be scared since you can’t afford to forget anything useful for the safari or it could be that you have already prepared things and items that are not even fitting into your backpack! Worry not, because we are here to help you out!
Rules for packing the perfect backpack for your safari!
- Pack less! You will be surprised how little stuff you need!
- Get prepared for the season you will travel. In Kenya the first raining season starts end of March until end of May, the second one from October to the beginning of December. If you are traveling during the raining season pack a rain jacket!
Preferred, Recommended, dressing code while on safari
Only pack clothes you’re OK with getting dirty! Also avoid black clothes because of the heat or neither wear neon or shiny clothes! Your Guide will send you back to the lodge for changing. So the best would be focusing on lightweight clothes in natural colours.
A typically outfit for the upper body is a T-shirt, and on top a long-sleeved shirt to keep mosquitos off at the evening hours. Personally I like to wear tank tops. For the lower body a lightweight pant is recommended. Especially for women knee-length clothing is always a good idea in the conservative Africa. Recommendable for footwear are a pair of comfortable runners made with a breathable material. Also it is advisable to carry a pair of flip flops for use around the camp.
Every day for safari prepare your small backpack! Don’t forget to pack enough water (2l) and some of your favourite snacks. Additionally, you might need to consider the following important items while packing.
- Toilet paper
- Hand sanitizer / wet wipes
- Insect repellent
- Power bank
- Long sleeve shirt
